CARRAPUCHEIRIÑA is a collection that presents nine women’s outfits for the spring-summer season, merging the heritage of the traditional Galician costume with the modernity of the street styleí concept. Traditional fabrics such as linen and cotton poplin are preserved, while new materials like faux leather are introduced. The silhouette and colors are also maintained, emphasizing the cinched waist as seen in the traditional Galician costume and using white, black, and red. However, prints are incorporated, inspired by traditional patterns but with a bold choice of vibrant colors.
Additionally, the collection aims to celebrate Galician identity from a renewed perspective, ensuring that the traditional costume is not seen as a static piece of the past or something worn only at specific cultural events, but rather as a symbol of cultural expression that evolves over time. This project embraces fashion that honors its roots without compromising the functionality and comfort of street style. The garments can be worn both in informal settings and special events, proving that tradition and modernity can coexist in perfect harmony.
The outfits in the collection are named after significant Galician female figures, such as Rosalía de Castro, Isabel Zendal, Maruxa Mallo, Emilia Pardo Bazán, María Pita, Xela Arias, Luisa Villalta, and Teresa Herrera. The final piece, Rosario Huidobro, is dedicated to my mother and great-aunt. Each design incorporates details inspired by traditional Galician attire, reinterpreted with a contemporary vision. For example, voluminous skirts and structured bodices are combined with graphic t-shirts and sweatshirts.
The fabrics reflect a blend of past and present: linen and cotton represent tradition, while faux leather and other contemporary materials add a more urban character. The use of layering and overlays represents the multiple layers that are always present in traditional clothing, even if they are not always visible, also playing with transparency effects.
For this project, five outfits from the collection were created, allowing the impact of the fusion between tradition and modernity to be visualized. These looks stand out for their versatility and their ability to connect with contemporary fashion while maintaining the essence of Galician dress. ìCarrapucheiriñaî thus reclaims a new way of understanding the traditional costume, transforming it into a living piece, constantly evolving and present in everyday life.
